Preview: February 25 – March 3, 2019

In the new week we look forward to many concerts of the premiertone artists around the world. In addition, several application deadlines for interesting competitions come to an end this week. You can find all the information about them at the bottom of our preview.

Concerts and events

Hossein Pishkar opens the new week with a concert with the Euregio Festival Orchestra on Monday in Osnabrück. Works by Mahler, Wagner and Mendelssohn Bartholdy will be performed. On Sunday, the young conductor will be performing at the "Konzert mit der Maus" with the WDR Symphony Orchestra at the Konzerthaus Dortmund. The program includes Smetana's Moldova. On Thursday, Daniel Raiskin will give a concert with the Macedonian Philharmonic Orchestra in Skopje. Works by Kodaly, Liszt and Tchaikovsky will be performed here.

Ilia Papandreou can be seen in the main role of Richard Strauss' opera "Ariadne auf Naxos" on the stage of the Mainfranken Theater Würzburg this Thursday. On Friday and Saturday, Sunhae Im will interpret Haydn's "Die Schöpfung" in Incheon, South Korea.

Violist Tomoko Akasaka and the Amaryllis Quartet will be guesting this week in Beirut, where the ensemble will perform a concert on February 28. The Vienna Cello Ensemble 5 + 1 with Joanna Sachryn will perform in Kyoto on Monday. On Tuesday, the sought-after cellist Claudio Bohórquez plays in the chamber music hall of the Berlin Philharmonic.

Aldo Baerten will give guest performances as the 1st flute with the Hallé Orchestra on February 28 and March 1 in Manchester. The flutist Johanna Dömötör shares the stage with the orchestra of the KlangVerwaltung. The joint concert will take place on the 3rd of March at the Munich Prinzregententheater. Clarinetist Thorsten Johanns will perform at the Festival Concertando Roma from February 28 on.

Auckland is looking forward to welcome Nicholas Rimmer for two concerts this week. On February 28, the pianist will perform Beethoven's Triple Concerto in C major, op. 56, together with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra. On Sunday, a chamber music concert will take place, this time with works by Korngold and Beethoven. Paul Rivinius will give a recital with Julian Steckel on Thursday. The program includes music by Beethoven, Franck and Poulenc. At the Belfast Music Society Festival, Marianna Shirinyan will give a recital with Isabelle van Keulen on Saturday. As part of the Perth Piano Sundays, Peter Donohoe will be performing a Mozart recital at the Perth Concert Hall this Sunday.

Competitions and master classes

The cellist Joanna Sachryn will give a workshop for strings at the Kloster Strahlend / Roding on the 1st of March. Young strings will also could participate in the Kocian Violin Competition and the Heran Violoncello Competition in the Czech town of Ústí nad Orlicí. In addition, the application deadline for the International Schubert Competition for Piano and for the organ competition for the Paul Hofhaimer Prize of the City of Innsbruck end this Thursday. Singers can apply until February 28 for the International Vocal Competition IUVENTUS CANTI.
