Preview: February 11-17, 2019
Exciting concerts, masterclasses and festival performances await us in the new week. From Boston via Edinburgh and Budapest all the way to Tokyo, the premiertone artists are on tour.
Concerts and events
Diana Tishchenko starts our preview with a joint recital with the pianist Guillame Bellom at the Hotel LUTETIA in Paris on February 11. Sophia Jaffé will be performing a recital with Björn Lehmann in Garmisch-Partenkirchen on the 16th and 17th of February. Here she interprets works by Mozart, Franck, Werbern and Schubert. Tomoko Akasaka also gives a concert with the Amaryllis Quartet in Frankfurt on Sunday. On February 15, Claudio Bohórquez will perform at the Philharmonic Concert in Nuremberg. Here, the cellist performs Elgar's Concerto for Violoncello and Orchestra in E minor op. 85. On the following day, Bohórquez will perform at the anniversary concert in the Berlin Philharmonic with the Scharoun Ensemble Berlin and the soprano Rinnat Moriah. Philip Higham will perform on February 16 at the Winterplay Festival in Edinburgh. In Budapest, László Fenyő will give a concert on the 17th of February with the Keller Quartett.
Ramón Ortega Quero is in Japan this week. On Monday he gives a joint recital with Ayano Shimada at the piano in Hyogo. On February 14, the oboist will be at a concert with the Japan Century Symphony Orchestra in Tokyo. This concert will be followed by two further performances with the Yamagata Symphony Orchestra in Yamagata on the 16th and 17th of February. The pianist Kateryna Titova and her duet partner Edgar Wiersocki give two concerts this week: On Valentine's Day, a duo concert takes place in the Palais Lichtenau in Potsdam. On Sunday the two pianists will be performing in Hamburg.
The Doric String Quartet will give a concert at the Milton Court Concert Hall in London on February 11 with Benjamin Grosvenor and Laurene Durantel. The ensemble has works by Schubert, Chopin and Fauré in its luggage. On February 14, a concert in Boston with works by Haydn, Bartók and Mendelssohn Bartholdy is on the quartet's calendar. This will be followed by a concert in Burlington on Friday and a guest appearance at Union College Schenectady on the 17th of February. In Turnhout, Belgium, the Novus String Quartet will be giving a concert on February 12 with string quartets by Sibelius, Mendelssohn Bartholdy and Schubert. With the same program, the ensemble can be heard a day later in Maasmechelen.
Conductor Reinhard Goebel conducts a concert of the Göttingen Symphony Orchestra with works of Viennese classical music on February 14. A day later, Daniel Raiskin conducts the Orkest van het Oosten at Het Muziekcentrum Enschede. The orchestra is going to perform music by Borodin, Tchaikovsky and Rimsky-Korsakov.
Finally, opera fans will once again have the opportunity to see Ilia Papandreou in the lead role of Strauss' "Ariadne auf Naxos" at the Mainfranken Theater Würzburg on 15 February.
Master classes and competitions
At the Nottingham High School you can look forward to a masterclass of Peter Donohoe in the field of piano, starting the 11th of February. This week, too, a lot of music competitions are all about the piano: young pianists born between 1989 and 2004 can register for the Concours International de Piano d'Espinal until Friday. Also on February 15, the application deadline for the "Top of the World" International Piano Competition ends. For a project scholarship of the City of Munich in the field "Young Art / New Media for Music" you can also apply until February 15, 2019.
